So I just brought someone in to interview for an unpaid internship with my company. The interview goes well and I ask this kid if he would like to be shown around - see the rest of the place. He says yes and as we are walking through the garage, he mentions he is a big car guy. Cool, you have my interest, lowly intern - tell me more. Goes on for a minute and tells me he recently got a new car - paid for all by himself with the cash he saved working summers. Good-for-you.jpg, what’d you get? “I got this Ford RS, it’s a 2014. I like it.” “No, you didn’t.” “Yea, it’s a submodel of the Focus, a step above the ST, with the 2.5 liter engine” “You have an awd, Focus RS from 2014?” “Well the funny thing is, it’s not awd - not like a defect, but mine isn’t awd.” “They were all awd.” “Well it’s got the 2.5 liter and says RS.” “So someone rebadeged it?” “It was cheap.”
Not sure I want someone who lies like this working for me. What do?

Don't hire him? That's oddly pathological.

I’m sorry kid, this isn’t going to work out.

He’s trying to impress with bullshittery.

In fairness, you are looking to fill an unpaid internship. What do you expect?
![]() 05/16/2016 at 13:04 |

I suspect he’s probably just dumb.

Can’t be trusted.

They were all AWD? Hmmmmmm...

Sounds like he is suffering from an extreme case of naivety. It would be a shame for you to hold it against him. He’s about to get a hard lesson in life.

I’m just going to go with “He doesn’t know better.” One instance i’m not going to freak about, multiple and I will start to get suspicious.

Maybe he thought he got an RS on the cheap, but he “just” got an ST and doesn’t know what makes an RS an RS and was just realizing he had been lied to, obviously he wasn't ready for that. And maybe he didn’t actually know any better and thought going the “I suuuper like cars” route was a good idea.
What age is this kid?
![]() 05/16/2016 at 13:06 |

Tell him you’ll hire him if he lets you take the RS for a spin ;)
![]() 05/16/2016 at 13:14 |

I think he’s lying, simply because no current gen Focus anywhere comes with a 2.5 liter engine. Also, I don’t think Focus STs are cheap.

Here is the door. Don’t call us. We will call you.
Peggy, delete his resume.

I think the lowly intern has an outrageoulsy over priced Mexican import. He can pay for it with his unpaid internship

Show him out and take a look at the car he leaves in.
Either he is lying completely and drives away in a flat-black Honda Civic, or he has a Focus ST with an RS badge on it...

INTEGRITY!

Benefit of the doubt. Yes, age will play into this.

Agreed. BS’ing car guys...about cars isn’t a good look.
See: M3 badge on 3 series with halogen lights.

MINE IS SPECIAL FROM THE FACTORY 1 OF 1.

Depends on how young he is. Either that or he is pretty lame.

Funny that the last thread I responded to was about how the BMW M-Sport label confuses people. I’ve read a few posts elsewhere where people thought a young guy bought a M5 with the super rare automatic transmission, etc, and were outright scammed. The posts I’ve read are consistent: someone feels bad mocking someone’s attempt at making a car look like something it isn’t thinking that the current owner put some Ebay badges and whatnot on their car and *that’s* how the owner finds out they’ve been ripped off, which is exceptionally harsh.
You might be looking at the same deal, just with a Ford.

My favorite game! Stupid or liar?

The new (AWD) RS isn’t a 2.5l anyway. It’s a 2.3. Kid doesn’t understand volumetric measurement.
![]() 05/16/2016 at 13:45 |

Have you seen this Focus RS?
It’s a 2.5 and it’s FWD?

And was never for sale here:

How am I supposed to know where you are? Your post is lacking information. Is he from another country maybe?
![]() 05/16/2016 at 14:01 |

I was thinking more along the lines of him buying a car that was misrepresented and spewing the garbage that the previous owner used to catch him, hook, line, and sinker. He needs to look up the VIN and see what he really owns.

Good example, I’ve seen the Audi S-Line cause confusion to make people think it’s actually an S as well.
![]() 05/16/2016 at 14:03 |

I think the poor kid got ripped off with some badges. God I hope it’s at least an ST.

Gotcha.
![]() 05/16/2016 at 15:09 |

Said version is not legally importable in to country mentioned above. Many have tried; all (but one) have failed. The one that got in isn’t technically legal though and sold at Barrett Jackson (some registered in Mexico gray area deal or something).

Who said he imported it?
![]() 05/16/2016 at 15:19 |

Negative.
![]() 05/16/2016 at 15:27 |

Well do you randomly go buy cars in countries that you don’t live in or have access to go drive in?
![]() 05/16/2016 at 15:35 |

One could say those marketing guys are up to something... uhm.
![]() 05/16/2016 at 16:26 |

Not unheard of.
I work with 3 people who have homes in their home country. They have tiny apartments here to work from and travel often. Some still own houses, vehicles, and children in those countries. It’s not common, but i’m just trying to rule out the possibilities.

Take on the apprentice and under your tutoring turn him into a powerful lord of darkness...Or is it light? I forget what side we are on.

Where exactly are you located? There are a couple of grey imported RS from Mexico in the US, I know that much...
![]() 05/16/2016 at 18:15 |

Nowhere near Mexico.
![]() 05/16/2016 at 18:15 |

Still an undergrad.
![]() 05/16/2016 at 18:17 |

Quite simply, there is no 2014 RS. The old model was FWD, but was killed off years ago. The current RS started in 2015.
![]() 05/16/2016 at 18:18 |
|
It was never built in 2014
![]() 05/16/2016 at 18:31 |

Well, depending how old he is he could just be incredibly dumb and have been tricked into it, not really a case for you hiring him.
It actually peaked my curiosity, I wish you would ask him and see what he says...

I should’ve stalked him out into the parking lot. Maybe I’ll let him work for me (for free, of course) just to see the car...
![]() 05/16/2016 at 18:51 |
|
I mean for free is really worth a shot, maybe he can at least bring you coffee a couple of times if he’s completely useless, you at least get to find out and he gets a bit of experience.
Though, a bad employee (even a free one) can cost you a lot of money in fuck ups if he is just hopeless...

If he tries telling me a cup of Folgers is a macchiato, he’s fired.
